UPPER DOLPO TREK 27NTS/28DAYS
Dolpa is a remote region that was opened to trekking only in 1989. It lies in the rain-shadow area north of the Himalayan range. High above the tree line, mammals like the blue sheep and the Himalayan tahr are frequently seen. The people and culture of Dolpa bear resemblance to Tibet. Phoksundo Lake, situated at a height of 3,660 m between towering rocks, is the destination of trekkers in Dolpa. Water spilling out from its southern end forms the highest waterfall in Nepal.
We fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and from there to the Dolpa airport at Jufal where our trail begins. Following the course of the Suli Gaad river, we walk through the villages of Ankhe and Reji to Phoksundo Lake. The trail then winds along the western shore of the lake to Shey Gomba (“crystal monastery”). We resume our trekking and after passing barley fields, meadows, chortens and monasteries and climbing over a number of high passes, we arrive at Dho, the largest settlement in the area. Walking down the Tarap Khola river valley, we pass through Tarakot and Dunai to reach Jufal for the flight back.
